Beanie Weinerman and the Creation of Southpaw
The inspiration for Southpaw was our good friend Beanie Weinerman - a Border Collie – Spaniel mix. I called him by his full name occasionally but also used Beanie, Bean, Beanbag, Weiner and Weinerman and he responded to all.
Beanie came from a rough neighborhood in Washington DC and the sense I have, he was not treated too well. He was hit by a car and basically abandoned but was rescued by the Humane Society in DC. The folks there took a real liking to him and with the co-operation of a DC vet, got his leg pinned and fixed. One of the executives of the DC Humane Society took him in as they looked for a home.
Our Australian Terrier Zoe had just passed after 15 wonderful years. We did not plan on getting another dog right away but during the annual visit of our cat to the vet, we found Beanie’s smiling face on a note on the wall. After a very careful screening of us, Bean came home and became part of the family.
Very skittish at first, Beanie developed great trust in us and became an amazing friend to all. A very independent soul who was very fast and difficult to catch if he got off the leash.
I bought the Biddiscombe company in 2004 and it had been making personal care products for 20 years at that point. Beanie started to come to the office and would make his daily rounds to each of our staff, particularly around lunch time, and would settle in beside me for his afternoon nap every day. He attended all meetings and loved greeting our mailman each day. Bathing Beanie was my responsibility and I tried many different shampoos. I was never happy with them and on one very contemplative day with Bean, we decided to create our own highly natural shampoo for him. With that Southpaw was born. Beanie passed before we finished our product development but when I think of Southpaw, I think of him. Every bottle of Southpaw product that we make celebrates the life of Beanie Weinerman with a contribution to our local Tampa Bay SPCA - John
